Aulonocara sp. 'pyramid' Luwala Reef
Genus: Aulonocara
Geographic distribution: Kande Island, Luwala Reef, and the southeastern arm of Lake Malawi.
Biotope: Open sand habitat. Observed over sand, often mixed with foraging schools of Aulonocara maylandi at Luwala Reef and Aulonocara kandeense at Kande Island.
Typical adult size: Up to about 12 cm total length.
Special notes: An elongate Aulonocara distinguished by a very large eye, long snout, and flat lower body profile. It resembles a small Aulonocara brevinidus but differs by its proportionally larger eye and longer snout. The enlarged sensory pores on the head clearly place it within Aulonocara. The species is very rarely observed, feeding and breeding behavior remain unknown, and it has never been exported for the aquarium hobby.
