Type locality:
Between Vua and Mwaya, Lake Malawi
Biotope:
Sandy habitats, often in open areas with little or no rock cover.
Geographic distribution:
Lake Malawi, mainly the central and northern parts of the lake.
Typical adult size:
Up to about 30 cm
Sexual dimorphism:
Males are more intensely colored and larger than females.
Recommended aquarium size:
At least 1000 L
Aquarium setup:
Very large aquarium with extensive open sandy areas and plenty of swimming space; minimal rock structures.
Diet:
Piscivorous predator feeding on smaller cichlids.
Breeding:
Maternal mouthbrooder; breeding takes place over sand.
Aggression:
Generally calm toward similarly sized fishes; smaller fishes are prey.
Special notes:
One of the classic large sand-dwelling predators of Lake Malawi, characterized by an oblique flank stripe typical for the genus.
