Open water close to rocky shores and intermediate habitats; typically found schooling above deeper water near islands and bays
Geographic distribution:
Lake Malawi, with confirmed records from Likoma Island and Mbamba Bay
Typical adult size:
Up to about 14 cm
Sexual dimorphism:
Males develop a darker breeding coloration with contrasting lighter areas on the head and fins, while females remain silvery and less distinctly marked
Recommended aquarium size:
Minimum 300 litres; aquarium length at least 150 cm
Aquarium setup:
Fine sandy substrate with limited rock structures; emphasis on open swimming space. Best kept with calm utaka or similar open-water cichlids
Diet:
Plankton feeder; feeds primarily on plankton in the open water column
Breeding:
Maternal mouthbrooder; males establish and defend spawning sites close to rocky structures
Aggression:
Generally peaceful; territorial mainly during breeding

Described by Iles (1960). Previously placed in Haplochromis and Cyrtocara. A schooling utaka requiring space to display natural behavior
