Lethrinops longimanus
Genus: Lethrinops
Type locality: Between Malembo and Bar House, Lake Malawi.
Biotope: Deep-water sandy to muddy substrates, typically at depths of about 50–70 m, occasionally recorded deeper.
Geographic distribution: Southern and central parts of Lake Malawi, mainly in the southern arm, with records extending north to central regions.
Typical adult size: Up to about 15–16 cm SL (approximately 18–19 cm total length).
Diet: Primarily feeds on benthic invertebrates, especially insect larvae and small crustaceans, obtained by sifting sand and fine sediments.
Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder. Males form lek-like territories on deep sandy bottoms, where females are courted and spawning occurs.
Aggression: Generally peaceful, with limited intraspecific aggression typical of deep-water Lethrinops species.
