Lethrinops macracanthus 'South East Arm'
Genus: Lethrinops
Type locality: Lake Malawi.
Biotope: Deep waters (35 to 65 metres) over sandy substrates.
Geographic distribution: Lake Malawi, with records from the SE Arm, Domira Bay and Nkhata Bay; also reported as widespread in southern Malawi.
Typical adult size: The maximum size is at least 19 cm SL, roughly 25 cm TL.
Sexual dimorphism: Ripe males are coppery with vertical bars more prominent and a bluish iridescence on the head.
Diet: Stomach contents are reported as mainly chironomids, but also some diatoms, small snails, ostracods, copepods and annelids.
Special notes: This species was historically a substantial proportion of deep-water trawl catches in the SE Arm, but was reported as virtually absent there by 1974. It has been found only rarely in later hauls and does not seem to have been recorded in subsequent surveys in the same area.
