Shallow to moderately shallow sandy bottoms
in intermediate zones between rocks and sand.
Geographic distribution:
Mainly southeastern Lake Malawi,
including areas near Ntekete.
Also recorded near N'kolongwe in Mozambique
and on the western coast near Nkhata Bay.
Typical adult size:
Males up to 15 cm in the lake,
up to about 17 cm in aquaria.
Females up to about 13 cm.
Sexual dimorphism:
Males display a distinct yellow blaze on the head,
which is absent in Lethrinops microstoma
and allows easy separation of the two species.
Diet:
Feeds primarily on invertebrates sifted from the sand.
In aquaria accepts a wide range of foods including
spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops
and shrimp–pea mixes.
Aggression:
Peaceful and quiet cichlid.
Best maintained with multiple females
and other calm species from similar habitats.
Special notes:
Previously known in the aquarium trade
as Lethrinops sp. “microstoma gold”.
