Lethrinops atrilabris 'NE of Monkey Bay'
Genus: Lethrinops
Type locality: Northeast of Monkey Bay, at a reported depth of 84–94 m.
Biotope: Deep-water habitat with muddy substrate at depths of 84–94 m.
Geographic distribution: Positively known only from the type locality in the south-eastern arm of Lake Malawi, northeast of Monkey Bay. A possible specimen has been photographed from a nearby area east of Domwe Island at similar depths.
Typical adult size: Does not exceed about 73 mm standard length (approximately 9 cm total length).
Sexual dimorphism: Mature males show a strong melanic pattern with contrasting dark vertical flank bars on a pale background and a dark area on the jaws, underside of the head and chest.
Special notes: Identified by ‘Lethrinops-type’ lower jaw dentition, relatively small adult size, large eye, short rounded snout, ventrally placed mouth, 13–14 gill rakers and a laterally compressed body. A deep-water species known only from very limited material.
