Nyassachromis sp. 'eucinostomus yellow' South East Arm

Biotope:
Open sandy areas in shallow water (35 m or less)
throughout the South East Arm of Lake Malawi.
Geographic distribution:
South East Arm of Lake Malawi, recorded both south
and north of Monkey Bay.
Typical adult size:
Up to 10 cm total length.
Sexual dimorphism:
Females and non-breeding males are silvery. Ripe males
have a black snout, bright yellow opercula, and a bright yellow
margin to the anal fin.
Special notes:
Distinguished by a relatively pointed snout and 10
lower gill rakers. Differs from related forms in gill-raker
counts and snout shape. Occurs commonly in shallow sandy
habitats of the South East Arm and formed 8.3% of fish biomass
in experimental trawls at depths of 30 m or less south of
Monkey Bay, and 2.5% north of Monkey Bay. In 1990–91 members of
the N. eucinostomus complex accounted for less than 0.5%
of midwater trawl bycatch.
