Otopharynx selenurus (unknown locality)
Genus: Otopharynx
Type locality: Domira Bay, Lake Malawi
Biotope: Sandy bays; reported at 9 m depth.
Geographic distribution: Mainly southern Lake Malawi; reported from Kambiri Point and reputedly from various localities around the lake.
Typical adult size: Up to 18 cm total length.
Sexual dimorphism: Males larger with more developed fins; coloration identical in both sexes.
Diet: Feeds by sifting invertebrates from sand and benefits from sediment disturbed by large sand-foraging species.
Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder. In aquarium the male displays over a plate or sandy patch where spawning occurs.
Special notes: All-blue cyrtocarine with three lateral blotches. Differs from Cyrtocara moorii by lacking a cranial hump and by a concave frontal profile; darker blue overall and with narrower mouth. Juveniles show the typical three-blotch pattern until about 7 cm length.
