Placidochromis argyrogaster 'Chilola Bay'
Genus: Placidochromis
Type locality: Chilola Bay, Lake Malawi, Mozambique
Biotope: Deep-water habitats deeper than 50 m, associated with subdued light conditions.
Geographic distribution: Collected in Lukoma Bay (Tanzania), at Nkhotakota (Malawi), and in Chilola Bay (Mozambique).
Typical adult size: Deep-water Placidochromis are predominantly small, with most species remaining under 10 cm standard length.
Special notes: This species belongs to the deep-water Placidochromis flock recognized from work on numerous newly described taxa, a fauna that lives and breeds in dimly lit depths and has not been observed in the lake’s accessible shallow waters. Within Hanssens’ grouping of deep-living Placidochromis, it is placed in group 5 and is characterized by a silver belly and a deeper snout than other members of that group.
