Placidochromis longus
Genus: Placidochromis
Type locality: Lukoma Bay, Lake Malawi, Tanzania
Biotope: Deep-water habitats below 50 m, inhabiting dimly lit environments where a distinct deep-water cichlid assemblage occurs.
Geographic distribution: Known only from Lukoma Bay, Tanzania, where all three specimens were collected in a single trawl.
Typical adult size: Deep-water Placidochromis species are generally small, with most remaining under 10 cm standard length.
Special notes: Placidochromis longus belongs to group 1 of the deep-living Placidochromis assemblage, which includes very elongate species. It is distinguished from P. elongatus by having a shorter snout and nine vertical bars below the dorsal fin (compared to 6–7 in P. elongatus). The deep-water Placidochromis form a distinct assemblage characterized by vertical melanin bars and considerable morphological variation.
