Placidochromis sp. 'phenochilus mavuto' Mara Rocks
Genus: Placidochromis
Geographic distribution: Known from Mara Rocks in Lake Malawi.
Special notes: This undescribed fish is provisionally referred to as Placidochromis sp. 'phenochilus mavuto'. Its taxonomic status remains unresolved, as it may represent either a variant of Placidochromis phenochilus or a distinct species. It exhibits characteristics associated with both P. phenochilus and Placidochromis sp. 'phenochilus tanzania'. Christophe Lacroix, known as “Mr Mavuto”, first observed and photographed the fish during a 2017 safari. The word “mavuto” means “problem” or “trouble”. Specimens collected at Mara Rocks were imported into the aquarium trade in March 2018, although that import reportedly included only two females.
