Type locality:
Domira Bay, Lake Malawi
Biotope:
Shallow, sediment-rich habitat with sandy bottom and reedy shoreline,
locally associated with beds of Vallisneria.
Geographic distribution:
Recorded from Domira Bay and from Chingole, approximately
36 km north of Domira Bay, Lake Malawi.
Typical adult size:
Holotype 65 mm total length.
Special notes:
Originally described by Regan (1922). Diagnostic characters include
a lower jaw shorter than the upper and a rounded mouth. The species
name refers to the presence of nine vertical bars on the flank and
caudal peduncle (novemfasciatus = nine bars). An adult male attributed
to this species shows a very convex upper head profile and a steep
vomer angle; however, the species remains placed in
Pseudotropheus pending further comparative material.
