Genus: Placidochromis
Type locality: Chiwanga Bay, Lake Malawi, Mozambique
Biotope: Deep-water habitats deeper than 50 m, living and breeding in subdued light conditions.
Typical adult size: Maximum recorded standard length about 13 cm.
Special notes: Placidochromis macrognathus belongs to group 4 of the deep-living Placidochromis assemblage, defined by species with 8–10 gill rakers. It is distinguished by a markedly strong lower jaw, giving it the appearance of a miniature Tyrannochromis nigriventer. The deep-water Placidochromis form a distinct assemblage characterized by vertical barring and considerable morphological variation among species.
