Genus: Copadichromis
Type locality: Gome, Lake Malawi, Malawi
Biotope: Primarily open water; during the breeding season also found near intermediate zones from rocks to sand on gently sloping shores
Geographic distribution: Very rare and localized; occasionally observed near Gome Rock and sporadically recorded near Chilumba
Typical adult size: Males up to about 15 cm in the lake (up to ~17 cm in aquarium); females up to about 12 cm
Sexual dimorphism: Breeding males are black with a creamy white to yellow blaze on the head and upper body. Females and non-breeding individuals lack flank spots and remain silvery
Recommended aquarium size: Large aquarium with extensive open swimming space
Aquarium setup: Open layout with minimal hardscape to maximize swimming space; gentle slopes of sand with limited rock structures are suitable for breeding behavior
Diet: Plankton feeder; feeds almost exclusively in the open water column
Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; breeding takes place near intermediate habitats rather than in fully pelagic conditions
Aggression: Generally peaceful; males become territorial only during the breeding season
Special notes: A rare member of the so-called “pure utaka”. Difficult to observe in the wild and infrequently collected. Best maintained in spacious aquaria that allow natural schooling and open-water behavior
