Deep, sediment-rich rocky habitat, occurring at depths
greater than 30 m.
Geographic distribution:
Eastern coast of Lake Malawi; recorded from Higga Reef
and Ngkuyo Island.
Typical adult size:
Up to 9 cm (males) / up to 8 cm (females).
Recommended aquarium size:
200 L
Aquarium setup:
Provide sufficient rockwork with numerous hiding places.
One male should be kept with three females, though larger
groups are also possible. Compatible with other peaceful
mbuna and calm Malawi cichlids.
Diet:
Carnivorous. Feeds mainly on insects, reflecting its
occurrence at depths where algae do not thrive.
Aggression:
Peaceful both within the species and toward other species.
Special notes:
Sometimes regarded as a geographic variant of
Labidochromis caeruleus. Adults show a yellow dorsal fin,
while juveniles may appear white with a black dorsal band.
Very rare at Higga Reef and extremely rare at Ngkuyo Island.
