Genus: Placidochromis
Biotope: Sandy substrates in the northern part of Lake Malawi, usually in association with sand-sifting cichlids such as Taeniolethrinops. Occupies the same ecological niche as Placidochromis electra in other regions.
Geographic distribution: Eastern shore of Lake Malawi from Ikombe (Tanzania) southwards to the Ruhuhu River.
Sexual dimorphism: Females and non-territorial males show distinctive black anal and pelvic fins, a key feature separating this form from other electra-like populations.
Feeding: Opportunistic sand feeder attracted to stirred-up sediment created by large sand-grubbing cichlids. Does not dig itself but picks edible particles from the surface and suspended debris.
Breeding: Likely a maternal mouthbrooder with internal fertilization, following the advanced spawning pattern characteristic of the electra species group.
Special notes: Member of the “blue follower” complex closely related to Placidochromis electra. Distinguished by black anal and pelvic fins in females and non-territorial males. Until intermediate populations are found, it is treated as a distinct species.
