Lake Malawi; confirmed only from Mandalawi Reef. Not found in
Mbamba Bay despite hobby references.
Sexual dimorphism:
Males display a yellow body with a
contrasting blue head; details
on females not documented.
Special notes:
Also referred to as Placidochromis sp. ‘mbamba’ by Ad Konings,
although Mbamba Bay is an incorrect locality for this species. The yellow
electra-type with blue head occurs exclusively at Mandalawi Reef, where it was
discovered by African Diving in April 1997 and introduced to the hobby as
Placidochromis sp. 'Electra Superior', Mandalawi Reef. In Mbamba Bay an
entirely blue electra-type is found instead.
