Genus: Buccochromis
Type locality: Lake Malawi
Biotope: Sandy habitats, often associated with beds of Vallisneria. Frequently encountered in the intermediate zone. Occurs at depths ranging from about 3 to 20 m.
Geographic distribution: Widespread throughout Lake Malawi.
Typical adult size: Males up to about 35 cm, females up to about 30 cm
Sexual dimorphism: Males grow larger and develop more intense coloration; females remain smaller and more subdued in appearance.
Recommended aquarium size: At least 1000 L
Aquarium setup: Very large aquarium with extensive open sandy areas. Use a fine sand substrate with only a few scattered rocks to simulate the intermediate habitat. Planting with Vallisneria in selected areas is recommended. Provide ample open swimming space.
Diet: Piscivorous predator feeding mainly on other cichlids, especially smaller haplochromines.
Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder. Best maintained in a harem structure with one male and several females.
Aggression: Generally peaceful toward sufficiently large tankmates, but becomes more aggressive during breeding. Smaller fishes will be regarded as prey.
Special notes: Should only be housed with other large and robust Malawi predators such as Buccochromis, Champsochromis, Dimidiochromis, Exochochromis, Nimbochromis, and Tyrannochromis.
