Deep-water habitats deeper than 50 m, associated with subdued light conditions.
Geographic distribution:
Confined to the southern part of Lake Malawi, particularly around the Nankumba
Peninsula.
Typical adult size:
Deep-water Placidochromis species are generally small, with most remaining under
10 cm standard length.
Special notes:
Placidochromis hennydaviesae is included in group 4 of the deep-living
Placidochromis assemblage, a set defined by species possessing 8–10 gill rakers. It is
distinguished within this group by having a larger mouth than the other members. The
deep-water Placidochromis represent a distinct assemblage inhabiting and breeding in
dimly lit depths beyond accessible shallow waters.
