Intermediate rocky/sandy habitat along the west
shore of Mumbo Island, recorded at depths of
6–9 m; also observed over sandy areas with
Vallisneria beds.
Geographic distribution:
Known only from Mumbo Island in the southwest
arm of Lake Malawi.
Typical adult size:
Up to about 14 cm total length.
Sexual dimorphism:
Live coloration of males is unknown. Females and
juveniles grey to creamy with three prominent
midlateral dark spots; flank scales with yellow-orange
basal spots.
Diet:
Diet unknown; intestine with multiple coils and fine
gravel observed in one specimen.
Special notes:
Described by Oliver (2018) and considered endemic
to Mumbo Island. Previously referred to in the
aquarium literature as Protomelas sp.
‘virgatus mumbo’. Characterized by a suprapectoral spot situated
entirely below the upper lateral line and by
enlarged, somewhat molariform teeth in the
median columns of the lower pharyngeal bone.
