Genus: Chindongo
Biotope: Intermediate to rocky habitat. Associated with sand and stones, where individuals excavate shallow burrows beneath rocks.
Geographic distribution: Lake Malawi. Exact distribution unclear.
Typical adult size: Unknown; presumed medium-sized mbuna.
Sexual dimorphism: Poorly documented. Males likely larger and more territorial than females.
Recommended aquarium size: 300 L or larger.
Aquarium setup: Sand substrate with rocks placed directly on the tank bottom. Stable rock structures allowing digging beneath stones. Provide visual barriers.
Diet: Primarily aufwuchs-based. Feeds on algae and associated microorganisms.
Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder. Males reportedly use self-excavated burrows as spawning sites.
Aggression: Territorial, especially males. Aggression presumed moderate to high.
Special notes: Undescribed species. Trade name “burrower” refers to its characteristic digging behavior, which is uncommon within the genus Chindongo. Taxonomic status remains unresolved.
