Large caves in rocky habitat, associated with large catfishes.
It occupies very large caves and is reported to reside near
the ceiling rather than the floor.
Geographic distribution:
Recorded from Chewere, Chitande Island, Nkanda, and Magunga Reef,
with an additional record from Lundu.
Sexual dimorphism:
Males are blue-black, while females are beige with brown bars.
Special notes:
Very similar to Pseudotropheus crabro in behavior and barring
pattern. It is attracted to large swimming objects in the water
and to debris stirred up by divers. At Chewere, two males and one
female were observed feeding on eggs of Bagrus meridionalis after
guarding catfishes had been disturbed.
