Genus: Diplotaxodon
Geographic distribution: Lake Malawi, northern half; documented from Nkhata Bay and Ngara.
Typical adult size: Up to about 14 cm SL.
Sexual dimorphism: Mature males develop a uniformly dark breeding dress with a narrow white margin along the dorsal fin.
Special notes: Material sampled by Genner et al. (2010) was misattributed to Diplotaxodon aeneus; mature males show a white dorsal-fin margin not known in that species, and have a relatively smaller head. Thirty-six adult males were collected at Nkhata Bay on 6–7 May 2005. Microsatellite data showed no differentiation between Nkhata Bay and Ngara samples. Adult males differ from Diplotaxodon macrops by a narrower white dorsal-fin margin and a generally larger body size. No full genome data are available.
