Genus: Lethrinops
Type locality: East of Monkey Bay, Lake Malawi.
Biotope: Deep-water species inhabiting sandy bottoms, recorded at depths between 40 and 92 m.
Geographic distribution: Endemic to Lake Malawi. Widespread in the southern part of the lake, south of Nkhota Kota.
Typical adult size: Up to 20.2 cm standard length.
Diet: Feeds mainly on gastropod mollusks.
Special notes: Characterized by a greatly enlarged pharyngeal bone with very molariform pharyngeal teeth.
