Genus: Placidochromis
Type locality: Southwest Arm, Malawi, Lake Malawi, Malawi
Biotope: Deep-water habitats below 50 m, inhabiting zones with reduced light levels.
Geographic distribution: Recorded from Senga Bay, along the SW–SE trawl transect north of the Nankumba Peninsula, and in the Southwest Arm, all in southern Malawi.
Typical adult size: Deep-water Placidochromis species are generally small, with most remaining under 10 cm standard length.
Special notes: Placidochromis boops is included in group 3 of the deep-living Placidochromis assemblage, a set defined by species possessing 14–24 gill rakers. The deep-water Placidochromis form a distinct assemblage inhabiting and breeding in dimly lit depths beyond commonly accessible shallow waters.
