Genus: Maylandia
Biotope: Intermediate habitat consisting of a flat sandy bottom with a few large sandstone slabs and scattered rock heaps. The species occurs close to the substrate in this sparsely structured environment.
Geographic distribution: Lake Malawi at Chitimba Bay.
Breeding: Only a few males have been observed. Although some displayed breeding coloration, they did not appear to maintain or defend clear territories.
Aggression: No pronounced territorial aggression has been observed in the limited number of males recorded.
Special notes: This small mbuna resembles Maylandia sp. ‘dumpy’ from the Maleri Islands in overall shape and appearance. Examination of skull morphology suggests that it is likewise a member of Maylandia. The species appears to be rare, with only a few individuals recorded so far, and its behavior and ecology remain poorly known.
