Lake Malawi cichlids — species, locations & maps

Genus:	Cynotilapia
Biotope:	Intermediate habitat; rocks scattered over sandy substrate
Geographic distribution:	Gallireya Reef (Hara Reef), north-western Lake Malawi, between Hara and Chilumba
Typical adult size:	Males up to 12 cm (can grow larger in aquarium); females usually up to 9 cm
Sexual dimorphism:	Males larger with lighter powder-blue coloration, reduced dark markings and longer fins; females smaller, darker blue to greyish, with shorter fins
Recommended aquarium size:	Minimum 250 litres; larger aquaria recommended for long-term maintenance
Aquarium setup:	Fine sand substrate with groups of rocks placed on top; harem structure recommended (1 male with 3–4 females); avoid closely related Cynotilapia and zebra-type mbuna due to hybridisation risk
Diet:	Omnivorous; feeds mainly on plankton in the wild
Breeding:	Maternal mouthbrooder; males dig spawning pits beneath stones and defend territories during spawning
Aggression:	Aggressive both towards conspecifics and other species, especially during spawning
Special notes:	Undescribed form with conical teeth; very similar in coloration to Metriaclima sp. 'zebra chilumba' but smaller and less robust; known from a very restricted range and popular in the aquarium hobby
