Genus: Nyassachromis
Type locality: Monkey Bay, Lake Malawi.
Biotope: Open sandy substrates in the southern part of Lake Malawi, where breeding males construct large sand structures.
Geographic distribution: Southern part of Lake Malawi, including records from Ntekete on the Malawian east coast. Reported to have a wider distribution within the southern region of the lake.
Typical adult size: Up to about 22 cm total length.
Recommended aquarium size: A minimum tank length of 160 cm and a volume of 500 l are recommended.
Aquarium setup: Requires extensive open sandy areas to allow males to build large mounds of sand with horizontal spawning platforms on top.
Breeding: Breeding males construct very large sand mounds with a horizontal spawning platform at the top, which is used as the spawning site.
Aggression: Territorial during the breeding period, with males defending their constructed sand mounds.
Special notes: Considered one of the largest species of the genus. Mature females are characterized by a prominent horizontal stripe along the flanks.
