Very shallow sandy areas of Lake Malawi where males
construct spawning bowers directly on open sand.
Geographic distribution:
Lake Malawi.
Typical adult size:
Up to about 16 cm total length.
Breeding:
Breeds from August to December. Males construct sand
bowers on open substrate in very shallow water. Territorial males
differ from those of N. breviceps in coloration, bower
structure, and preferred depth.
Aggression:
Territorial during the breeding season, with males
defending their sand bowers.
Special notes:
Previously placed in Copadichromis but assigned to
Nyassachromis based on pigmentation pattern and breeding
behavior. Possesses a protrusible mouth. Non-breeding males and
females are similar in shape and basic coloration to those of
N. breviceps.
