Genus: Mchenga
Type locality: Nkhata Bay, Lake Malawi.
Biotope: Shallow habitats, typically over sandy substrates between about 3–25 m depth; also reported from very shallow intermediate habitat at Chitande Island.
Geographic distribution: Reported from Chitande Island, Mbowe, and Kande Island.
Typical adult size: Approximately 12 cm total length.
Special notes: This species is described as lacking body markings and is considered largely unfamiliar to aquarists. It can be distinguished from other similarly nondescript utaka by yellow anal and pelvic fins; the name is explained as meaning “yellow hand”. Subadults, or a closely similar form, have been noted in very shallow water.
